Postcards - Typography Projects

Postcard Assignment

My professor assigned the class to make 6 postcards only using words and/or letters to make images describing the word we were trying to illustrate (if that makes any sense at all) hopefully, you will understand by looking at my project

Wicked Tour Date Poster - Typography Projects

Wicked Tour Poster

My professor assigned the class a tour dates poster for any band we liked. I especially like Wicked the musical, so I got his permission to use it. The only thing we really had to follow was that there was 13 separate dates. When I turned it in, my professor liked it so much he asked for the file to show future classes.

Zipty Do Font Cube - Typography Projects

Zipty Do Font Cube

My professor assigned the class to research any font we liked and write about 1300 words on what we could find. Then make a 7"x7" cube with a working color scheme. The trick was that any person could pick it up at any point and start from any side of the cube and be never get lost or confused. I chose the font "Zipty Do" by Bob Alonso and decided to go with a pastel-like color scheme. I wanted a child to enjoy it, but also an adult who may be interested in fonts.

First Campaign

Here is the first campaign I have ever written. I did it for a class with a group. I was the account executive and did most of the writing and logistics of the campaign. Everything is realistic and hopefully it will be completed in the future.

Brochure for "Feel Your Art-Beat"

• What were you trying to accomplish with your design decisions?

I am doing a PR campaign for the Newport Public Schools Fine Arts Program, so I decided to use this project to get ahead on my campaign. I used inDesign to create a brochure that would go in local businesses, be available at school events, parent teacher conferences, as well as being mailed with report cards.

• What challenges and problems did you encountered and how did you solved them?

I found it challenging to create columns in inDesign, as well as make the brochure entertaining without being overloaded with information. It was hard to balance images and information.

• What was new for you?

Creating a brochure was a whole new thing for me. I didn't realize how difficult it was to make sure there are plenty of images to go with information. Brochures are there to sell something, or help gain popularity so there needs to be a lot of images.

• What did you enjoy most about the project?

I liked being able to incorporate the Fine Arts programs accomplishments while also providing information about the program to parents (future families too!) and the community. Brochures are the perfect way to provide publicity to families, especially if it sent home with their children.

• What are you most proud of in relation to this assignment?

I am most proud that it's very colorful and eye-catching. Parents will look at it, but also students, who are the primary target public for the campaign. They will look for their friends, while also learning about the fine arts program that is available to them. Also, parents can look for their children in the pictures, or find out their child is mentioned in the brochure and they will want to keep it as a memento.

• What were you trying to accomplish with your design decisions?

I am doing a PR campaign for the Newport Public Schools Fine Arts Program, so I decided to use this project to get ahead on my campaign. I am supporting the Rogers High School chorus in this poster with their upcoming concert. I used the school colors and tried to keep it simple but still something that can grab a person's attention.

• What challenges and problems did you encountered and how did you solved them?

I only encountered problems when dealing with Quark. I prefer Illustrator over Quark so it just took time to adjust to find certain things where I thought I would have found them.

• What was new for you?

Quark as a whole program was new. I have always been told to use Illustrator over Quark so I wasn't too excited about learning Quark. Overall, I'm glad to know how to use it but I still prefer Illustrator.

• What did you enjoy most about the project?

I really enjoyed playing with the fonts and how I got to play with them. I originally had a lot of boring fonts but I feel as though when I played with the fonts, the poster came to life. Such as the word "lifetime". It was originally in Times New Roman but then I changed it to Adienne Cursive and it really took the poster in a whole new direction.

• What are you most proud of in relation to this assignment?

I am most proud that it is not another boring flyer for a concert at a high school. Often they do not grab attention, have any images or anything on it, with this poster, people are to look twice at it and read the information on it.

• What could you have done had you had more time?

I think I would see if I could rearrange the text in different spots and maybe find another image to fill the empty space.

Michael Buble
View more presentations from Kay.

• What were you trying to accomplish with your design decisions?

When I think of Michael Buble in a design state of mind, I think class and suave. I used cursive-like fonts to show suave and class, as well as that Mr. Buble uses cursive for a lot of his fonts on his albums. Also, I used two of his more famous songs with a steady tempo that involves a foot tap, but not rocking out, which lead me to the decision of the simple colors of black, white, and gray. Those three colors are not loud

• What challenges and problems did you encountered and how did you solved them?

I only encountered one problem and it was while I was editing the music. Come to find out I had the wrong format of the song. I brought the song into iTunes and converted it to a MP3 then brought it back to Audacity where I finally was able to successfully the song.

• What was new for you?

I have worked with Powerpoint many times, including using all of the different transitions, rehearsing times, but then again I am certified in Microsoft Office 2003 and that previous experience helped me work with the updated Powerpoint.

• What did you enjoy most about the project?

I enjoyed editing the music. It was fun to play with the song by itself, but then the challenge of combining the two songs together so it wasn't too obvious was my favorite. I have now used Audacity for two other projects that I attached music to my Powerpoints (just like this project).

• What are you most proud of in relation to this assignment?

I am most proud of my music, even though it sounds a little rocky at the end, I feel as though f I had more time I would work on the music more so it would go more smoothly.

• What could you have done had you had more time?

Well as previously stated, I would work on the music to make it go more smoothly, but also I would work on how the music is aligned with slides.

Exquisite Corpse

Contact Sheet

First row: The goal of the first row was to show the differences between high and low dots per image (dpi). I did most of this contact sheet on my own, so I decided to choose an image from flickr.com that was originally 1200 dpi. Then through photoshop I lowered the dpi to 600 then to 300 then lastly 72. I didn't come across much trouble doing this particular row.

Second row: The goal of the second row was to show the different modes you can make a photo look like. I found a photo off of flickr.com and then resized it in photoshop to fit in the contact sheet. Then I uploaded it into the contact sheet and went back to the original file so I could change the mode. I had trouble at first changing the photo to CMYK but then I switched computers and it worked fine. Changing the photo to duo-tone and B&W was no issue either.

Third row: The goal of the third row was to show the different orientation you can change a photo in photoshop. I first chose a beautiful photo of the Taj Mahal from flickr.com - I had trouble with this row at first because I did not do it in class so I did not know how to change the size of the crop tool, but eventually figured it out myself after clicking around.

Fourth row: The goal of the fourth row was to change the frame of the photo, to show how you can change what is seen in the picture through photoshop. I did not have any trouble with this assignment. All I did was use the crop tool to "shave off" the edges of the photo so it looks like I am getting closer to whatever is the center of the photo but all I am doing is cropping and resizing.

Fifth row: The goal of the fourth row was to show how cropping a photo can create a whole new image. I first started out with an image of three sock monkeys from flickr.com. I then cropped a large portion of it then saved it, cropped a large portion again and saved, then cropped it again to a very small size to create a completely different image than what the sock monkeys looked like from the beginning.

Sixth row: The goal of the sixth row was to show the different ways you can make a photo look like with different filters. I found this the most fun to play with. I chose a photo of my boyfriend and I, then chose three different filters. I chose my favorite, mosaic tiles, and then chose two other of my favorites, glowing edges and palette knife.

First Draft

  • Why did you choose that particular poem or saying?
I chose this particular quote because I am a little kid at heart. I love to embrace my inner child when I can, and this was the perfect opportunity to embrace it, using Dr. Seuss.
  • why did you choose the fonts you did?
The main font I used was "Marker Felt". I felt as though someone actually wrote it, especially a teacher's handwriting. Since it was a Dr. Seuss quote, I used what I thought were 'kid friendly' fonts such as Spumoni LP Std, which I used for the word "Oh".
  • why did you arrange the words the way you did?
I arranged the words in this particular manner because its fun to follow, but also the key words are portrayed in the manner of their definition.
  • what problems did you encounter and how did you solve them?
One problem I encountered was figuring out how to space the letters in the words "left" and "right". I was trying to find the font that I thought would display the words correctly, but I decided to stick with the original font, and put spaces inbetween each letter so it would look more spaced out. Also, I had a hard time
  • of what are you most proud?
I am most proud of how I displayed the meaning of the words through the actual word. It was difficult for me to figure out how to display "left" and "right" but as I played with different fonts, I realized how to do it.
  • what would you do if you had more time?
I think I would play around with the background some more or try using more fonts or exploring more colors rather than sticking to the regular rainbow colors.
